1. d4 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 a6 5. e4 b5 6. e5 Nd5 7. a4 e6 Giving back the extra pawn, but it's preferable to allowing White to chuck in e6 himself after e.g. 7... Nxc3 8. bxc3 Bb7 9. e6! and numerous games show that it's easier to attack than defend in this position 8. axb5 Frequently played with a flourish - White often thinks Black has blundered 8... Nb6 9. Be2 Be7 10. O-O O-O 11. Be3 Bb7 A typical position for this line. After the b5 pawn is exchanged, the 'weakness' of the c-pawns is difficult to exploit - the c7 pawn is very well hidden and the weak c4 pawn is balanced by the backward d4 pawn. Also, while on c4, the pawn cramps White's forces and makes it difficult to organise any Kingside play 12. Qc2 Qd7 13. Bg5 Bxf3 14. Bxf3 Bxg5 15. Bxa8 Nxa8 16. Qe4 Nb6 17. bxa6 An imbalanced position has arisen - Black's slight material edge should show in the long run, but the a-pawn will need very careful watching 17... Nc6 18. Rfd1 Ne7 19. h4 Bh6 20. g4 g6 21. g5 Bg7 Burying the bishop, but the pawns will be weak if the bishop escapes.. 22. Ra5 Ned5 23. Rda1 c6?! Intending to round up the a-pawn after a7 with ..Ra8 and . .Nc8, however ..Nb4 or ..Ra8 immediately might have been more accurate 24. Na4! Nxa4 25. R1xa4 c3 26. a7?! Curiously a bad idea to commit this pawn so early - I get to round it up as planned earlier! 26... Ra8 Missing the rather fantastic 26... cxb2! 27. a8=Q Nc3 28. Qe1 b1=Q 29. Qxb1 Nxb1 27. Qc2 Bf8? 27... cxb2 was again a better move 28. bxc3 Nb6 29. Ra1 Qc7! 30. Qd3 Nc8 31. Qc4 Rxa7 32. Rxa7 Nxa7 33. Ra6 Black's got the pawn, but the pieces need untangling. The exposed nature of the White King helps me do just this. 33... Qb7! 34. Kh2 c5! 35. dxc5 Bxc5 36. Ra5? 36. Ra2 was forced, but this was a time trouble error 36... Bxf2 Now Black is winning 37. Qd3 Qc7 38. Ra2 Qxe5+ 39. Kg2 Bc5 40. Re2 Qf4 41. Re4 Qf2+ 42. Kh3 Nc6 43. Rc4 Ne5! 44. Qd8+ Bf8 44... Kg7 45. Qf6+ 45. Rc8 Threatening mate, but .. 45... Qf3+ 46.
